The Geography of the Cafeteria
Group hierarchy and its unwritten map
“a geography of its own, as rigid as the one in the hallways” The center under the best light for the strong, the edges by the trash cans for everyone else: the cafeteria is laid out like a map of power that no one drew, yet everyone reads without a single mistake. Adolescent communities build such hierarchies spontaneously, and one’s place on the map is felt by the body — like physics, not like an opinion.
What matters: this geography is maintained not only by the “kings”. Everyone who picks a table votes daily for the map — that is how a hierarchy reproduces itself without a single order given. And it has a price: to those seated by the trash cans, the map announces every day exactly what they are worth.
