Psychology · Chapter 7 · Simon: trauma & survival
Taking Him Away — From Him
Why a victim defends the abuser
“He was being taken away — from him.” Ashley brings salvation — Simon hears catastrophe. This is not madness but the logic of a trauma bond: for years his days “held together on this one man like on a single nail”. When an entire life is organized around one figure — even the figure of a tormentor — that figure’s disappearance is experienced not as liberation but as collapse.
This is exactly why victims of domestic violence withdraw their statements and prosecution witnesses recant: the system offers to remove the abuser but offers nothing to fill the void. “They were taking away the only thing he had left — and calling it salvation” is one of the book’s most precise lines about what help looks like when it arrives without understanding, and years too late.
