Who You Are Without It
Dismantling the persona
“I wanted only you to remain here.” The cut shirt is neither an erotic gesture nor a sadistic one: Simon is removing Jacob’s layers — the uniform, the team, Craig, Priscilla, the laughter that switches on with his. He wants “only you”: the core without the armor. For three years he loved the man he saw through the persona — and now he tries to extract that core surgically.
The irony is that a persona is not packaging that can be cut away: it is load-bearing. Jacob without the jacket, the retinue and the status is not “the real Jacob” but a man in mid-demolition — and what shows through is not a core but fear. What is real in people is opened by trust and time. Scissors only open skin.
