No One Would Believe Him

Why victims stay silent
The moment in the text · Chapter 5
“no one. No one would ever believe him”

Simon nods to the coach — “everything’s fine” — and this is the most documentary moment of the chapter. Victims do not stay silent out of weakness. They make a sober calculation: the aggressor has a reputation, a team, charm; the victim has his word against the king’s — and a secret that any inquiry would drag into the light.

Jacob’s three-second transformation into the “golden boy” shows exactly what a victim is up against: an abuser’s public mask is flawless because it has been rehearsed for years. When someone says “no one will believe me”, they are usually right — from experience. That is why “why didn’t you tell anyone?” is the wrong question. The right one is: “what made it impossible for you to be heard?”
