Grab First

Crisis intervention: act first, understand later
The moment in the text · Chapter 16
“if there is still a chance to pull them both away from the edge, you grab first”

Under the window Ashley stops solving the unsolvable — who here is the attacker, who is the hostage — and formulates the rule every crisis service in the world runs on: if there is still a chance to pull them both away from the edge, you grab first. Sorting things out comes later. To the dispatcher’s question about who is in danger she gives the only right answer: both of them.

This rule dissolves the paralysis that kills more often than malice does: a witness hesitates because they are afraid of judging the situation wrongly. In an acute crisis no judgment is needed — a call is. Ashley did not know whom she was saving, and she called; that call started the countdown that ended with fingers on a weak pulse. Not understanding is no reason to do nothing. Sometimes it is the only honest state from which help is possible at all.
