Already Said Goodbye
“People who were going somewhere to talk did not look as though they had already said goodbye.” Ashley sees the same face three times: in the parking lot, in memory, through the window of the house. Not at peace — finished. We have examined this state from the inside (“Silent on His Frequency”, “Layered Like a Lie”); now the author shows what it looks like from the outside — through the eyes of someone who can still intervene.
Remember this chapter’s formula: people who are going somewhere to talk do not look as though they have already said goodbye. A mismatch between words and state — “just going to talk” on a face that has taken its leave, sudden calm after long despair, belongings given away, a finished quality in the gestures — is a serious danger signal that calls for action, even when everything else looks ordinary. It gives Ashley no rest for a day. In the end, it saves two lives.
