“You Already Are”

The blind spot of 'I'm not causing pain'
The moment in the text · Chapter 15
“You already are.”

With one sentence Jacob punctures the formula the entire plan stood on. “I’m not going to hurt you” — “You already are.” And for the first time confusion crosses Simon’s face: this possibility genuinely was not in the calculations. The moral license (ch. 12) was calibrated for physical pain only — cloth under the chains, a blanket, not a single blow.

Here you can see how consciousness narrows inside a script: the other’s pain is counted only in the currency you yourself were beaten with. Simon, who knows everything about mental pain, failed to see that he was administering it to another — in the maximum dose. It is not hypocrisy but tunnel vision: the plan decided in advance what counts as pain and what counts as “care”. The living Jacob does not fit into those calculations.
