The Hands That Love and Beat

Complex developmental trauma (C-PTSD)
The moment in the text · Chapter 4
“the hands that love you and the hands that beat you are the same hands”

The map of bruises on Simon’s body is his biography: beneath the fresh marks of Jacob and Craig lie the oldest ones — his father’s. When pain comes from the very person who is supposed to protect and love, a child’s psyche cannot choose “either–or”: it needs the parent. So it stitches the incompatible together — love and danger become one experience.

That is the core of complex trauma. Growing up, such a person does not “choose” cruel people — he recognizes in them a familiar configuration of closeness: tenderness feels alarming and foreign, threat feels frightening but “like home”. Until the knot is named and untangled — usually in therapy — the script keeps trying to repeat itself.
