Psychology · Chapter 9 · Jacob: power & repression
A Lid Over the Real Thing
Motivated reasoning: desire dressed as pragmatism
“At the word "in private," something dark and warm pulled inside him.” Watch how Jacob makes the most fateful decision of his life. His reason lists the convenient: the director is watching, Ashley is digging, one-on-one the advantage is his. And the real engine — the short dark warmth at the word “in private” — is shoved down and covered with a lid: I’m just going to sort out a problem.
This is motivated reasoning: the decision has already been made by a feeling, and the intellect merely draws up the paperwork. That is why the clever, careful, all-calculating Jacob will get behind the wheel in the evening and drive himself into the trap: you cannot hide from yourself — but you can decline to be introduced.
